Vanessa’s Reading Questions for September 16th (NSQ VIII-XII)

1. Paul in All Quiet on the Western Front and Nellie in Not So Quiet both use imagery of earth and nature. Why do you think Nellie mentions the earth in these chapters, and does her reason differ from Paul’s connection to nature?

2. How does Nellie’s mother’s reaction to her quitting the war reflect the view that society has on the experiences that women have during the war? Does this societal view impact war efforts and if so, how?

3. Nellie seems to have become jaded and unsure of how she should act after the war. She repetitively says “I’m happy! I’m happy,” even though she no longer thinks her generation can ever be happy again. What is the meaning behind this repetition and how does it tie back to gender roles and the suffering that women endured during WWI?
