Hey everyone, I watched Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022) this weekend, and admittedly, Pinocchio was one of those childhood stories I was never as familiar with. Honestly, the only version of Pinocchio I know was from Shrek, BUT after watching this film…LOVE HIMMM!
But the point of this post was that for historical context, the beginning of this film is set during the Great War… I just felt the need to share that and it is worth the watch! I also did a bit of a historical deep dive after watching the film of the original story. Please if you have any thoughts on this film or the original story, please share!

Admittedly, the Shrek version was the only one that I was aware of as well, I’m going to check this out.
I love this film!!! I listen to the soundtrack literally all the time. I’ve watched it about one and a half times and never actually thought about the war aspect of it that much…. from what I remember though, Pinocchio was indoctrinated into the war effort because of his desire to be seen as a real boy (i think?) which is actually so interesting! I definitely should rewatch it with a new perspective!
My mom hated this movie after reading the book. She said it wasn’t the book AT ALL and JUST MAKE YOUR OWN MOVIE DON’T RIP OFF SOMEONE ELSE’S WORK!
I have neither seen the movie nor actually read the book so I find the contrast of opinions hilarious since I don’t have context.
This is so cool! Guillermo is such a talented director, but I have never watched his version of Pinocchio, and didnt know about the setting being in the Great War. Definitely gonna give this a watch!
